Traffic-calmed Old Town

Local stakeholders from the city government, private business, local universities and civil society met in Chiang Mai to discuss the conditions and approaches to reduce cars in the Old Town centre. 

To deepen the results of the Low Carbon Mobility Planning (LCMP) project planning workshop held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in July 2017, local stakeholders from the city government, private business, local universities and civil society met again in February 2018. The aim was to concretize the project planning and to agree on implementation steps.

The first workshop provided a better understanding of the LCMP concept and its local application. Experiences on successful models in other places, especially in Leipzig, Germany, were discussed. They served as an example for planning an integrated and sustainable mobility system that combines intelligent transport planning with settlement development and land use issues. In addition, the workshop supported improved working relationships between various stakeholders in Chiang Mai City, which has now been established.

For example, the objectives of the current meeting were to develop a roadmap and appropriate measures to reduce motorized traffic in Chiang Mai's city center and to plan short-term activities to improve pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

Expected results are among others:

  • Increase in the number of pedestrians and cyclists in the old city of Chiang Mai
  • Reduction of cars in the city center (about 20% within 3 years)
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions and air pollution in general

In the long term, a holistic urban development of the old town (e.g. improved public spaces and squares, pedestrian zones for locals and tourists alike, increased energy efficiency, e.g. through renewable energies in buildings) will be pursued.
